One of the unique ways that Coburn Ventures aims to build its community is through its Fellows program. The approximately 45 Fellows come from many backgrounds and excel in many different fields from social media to the internet to social anthropology. They are professionals who have devoted their careers to studying and researching change, just as we have, but through very different professions, ranging from academia to entrepreneurship to strategy. All come with very rich understanding of both change and of specific industries and verticals, bringing a different lens for looking at how that change may impact society and business. All of the Fellows share a commitment to exceling at their craft and to contributing to their broader community.
The Fellows initiative started as such: at the time of incorporation Pip sought an eclectic group of “advisors” for the business. In 3 days, he had 7 “advisors” with many more interesting people still to include. What he realized quickly was that he didn’t want advisors but rather he wanted Coburn Ventures to be something of a shared space to have fun every day with passionate people we admire deeply and whose company we cherish. So the Fellows initiative became a way for Coburn Ventures to create a playground for all of us to hopefully benefit each day from one another’s presence In a common high trust community.
They are critical to what we do and an integral part of who we are. We include Fellows in our gatherings and interact with them to add perspective on our thinking. Fellows may receive all of our work and thinking and often contribute back. There is no exchange of compensation between Coburn Ventures and the Fellows. The Fellows program keeps with the notion that community is more strongly built on contribution as opposed to obligation and as such the Fellows have absolutely zero requirements to fulfill. This better allows for passion to be the operative experience in the community.
